The expert professor: Investigating the concept of expertise in the pedagogy of musical performance
Abstract: Musical performance can be characterized by the artistic achievement - especially public - in a musical instrument, and involves, among other things, controlling the cognitive processes related to this sensory-motor and emotional realization. The performance can be prepared in the interaction between technical aspects, interpretive aspects, and individual strategies developed in the long term, that can contribute to the musicians obtaining expert performances. Research on expertise is generally derived from records from empirical studies in different fields, and the data have demonstrated determining factors for achieving superior performance spanning different domains. However, although there is growing literature, there is still little literature in Brazil, both in the scope of the processes of building expertise in musical performance and the expertise of the instrument teacher. The initial aim of this research is to investigate the pedagogical expertise of clarinet teachers, analyzing their methodological procedures about their pedagogical practices. The focus of this research is the analysis of the pedagogue's expertise in musical performance as a fundamental factor in the development of musical expertise. The hypothesis proposed here is that the high level of performance of clarinetists in Brazil is directly related to the contact that these clarinetist experts had with high-level teachers, that is, the development of musical expertise is directly related to the quality of the pedagogical work of expert teachers.
