Synesthesia can be broadly defined as a neurological condition that causes a blending of different sensory aspects that are unrelated to each other. There is a significant challenge in standardizing a single definition that encompasses all the mechanisms synesthesia entails. Thus, the main objective of this study was to introduce the general characteristics of synesthesia and discuss its various subgroups, with a primary focus on color synesthesia, thereby contributing to the bibliography in the Portuguese language. As a result, we divided the study into eleven descriptive subchapters about the main types of synesthesia and identified that the general definition is overly broad and often overlooks specific characteristics. We understand that the scarcity of volunteers with synesthesia may pose some barriers to conducting more robust studies, but despite all adversities, progress in research has been remarkable.
