
This study investigated the motivational factors that influence people who began studying music as adults, enrolled in five public and private music schools in João Pessoa, PB. Using a survey research approach, data was collected from a representative sample of these adults. Data analysis revealed a variety of motivational factors, including the search for self-development, the desire to explore a new skill and the interest in social integration through music. In addition, significant differences were identified between the motives of adults enrolled in public and private schools. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the motivational processes involved in music learning in adulthood and highlights the importance of differentiated approaches to meet the varied needs of this group.
