Music, laterality and learning: An integrative review

Abstract

The present study aimed to investigate relations between laterality and learning, adding music in this context as well, since the bimanual motor training required for most instruments has been identified as one of the aspects that contribute to the effects of neuronal plasticity resulting from musical practice. The methodology used was an integrative review and incorporated the approach of the three or, at least, two of the related aspects as the main inclusion criterion. No studies were found aimed at dialogue between the three themes, which resulted in a collection divided into axes: Music and Learning, Laterality and Learning, and Laterality and Music. The analysis allows the conclusion that the learning processes, mainly associated with language skills, have close relations with the information processing mechanisms influenced by laterality issues and can be enhanced by musical practice.
