Saw Nielsen defines practice strategies as structured and intentional approaches used to improve musical performance. According to her, effective musical practice involves the use of strategies that help musicians understand, assimilate, and perform musical pieces with greater precision and expressiveness. The purpose of this research was to identify and classify practice strategies used by an amateur pianist in the preparation of a musical piece from a lead sheet. A case study was conducted using the think-aloud protocol and IQEP analysis. Four new strategies were found in relation to those found in the studies corroborated in the theoretical scope of this work. In addition, it was found that the autonomy of the pianist participating in the research was conditioned by his level of expertise, since the completion of the task involved perceptive and problem-solving skills that expert pianists often face.
