Abstract

Deliberate practice is the gold standard for developing expertise in any domain and involves setting clear goals, paying attention, focusing, stepping out of one's comfort zone, and providing feedback. The use of a reflective diary by the practitioner can facilitate the achievement of this practice. This research aimed to investigate the effectiveness of using reflective diaries for the study of popular piano. A multi-case study was conducted with three undergraduate music students, who filled out their diaries during a semester of piano lessons. The diaries were transcribed and subjected to content analysis. Results showed that the students' reflections involved three categories: task description, self-assessment, and emotional states. It was concluded that the reflective diary favored awareness of learning popular piano and contributed to the students' self-regulation, proving to be an effective tool for the development of deliberate practice.
